Now the alkaline diet is really recommended only for die-hard dieters, which Victoria evidently is. It includes cutting out some of our fondest indulgences like pasta, wheat, dairy products, meat, fish, coffee, tea, sugar, fizzy drinks, and even alcohol.

Inspired by the likes of Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston, a large number of the Brits are following an alkaline diet, reports OK! That is understandable, of course, since celebrity diets and health trends are quickly lapped up by the commoners.

The point here is how effective or beneficial an alkaline diet is? Does Angelina Jolie’s fitness and health secret actually lie in this kind of diet?

To answer that question, it’s important to find out what an alkaline diet is and how it really works.

Well, this kind of diet really hit the news when Victoria Beckham tweeted about an alkaline diet cookbook in January 2013. According to WebMD, most fruits and vegetables, soybeans and tofu, and some nuts, seeds, and legumes are alkaline-promoting foods.

But dairy, eggs, meat, most grains, and processed foods, like canned and packaged snacks and convenience foods are the non-alkaline variety.

How it works is basically by helping the body maintain its pH level. Some research suggests that a diet low in acid-producing foods such as animal protein (meat, cheese etc) and bread, and high in fruits and vegetables helps boost the healthy in many ways.

It’s said to prevent kidney stones, keep bones and muscles strong and also to improve heart health and brain functioning. It’s also said to reduce lower back pain and minimize the risk of type 2 diabetes.
